Isla de Soyaltepec flooded valley
Isla de Soyaltepec was once a hilltop in the middle of a fertile valley. When the Miguel Aleman dam was built in 1947 it created one of the largest artificial lakes in the whole of Mexico and the hilltop became an island. Native groups were forced to move from the mainland to a new "island" and had to leave behind their long time agricultural way of life to start fishing. This is a view of the now flooded valley taken from the highest point on the Island.
