Youth courses (ages 14 to 16)
The Humboldt-Institut, a non-profit organization first
established in 1977, is one of Germany's finest language institutes.
It was built on the philosophy that the quickest way to learn a foreign
language is to spend time in the country where that language is spoken.
There is no better way to really master the German language than
to be immersed in German culture and to communicate freely in German
with Germans. This is the focus of the Humboldt Intitut.
Lindenburg - Residential programme
The Place
Lindenberg is a health resort town (800 m above sea
level) tucked away in the idyllic Westallgäu in the foothills
of
the Alps. The beautiful surroundings and nearby Lake Constance
offers students a number of attractive destinations for excursions.
Lindenberg is a popular vacation spot with a variety of sports and
recreational facilities.
Due to Lindenberg's flexible course system, its intensive
courses meet a wide range of requirements. For example, if students
want to attend a German high school or if they would like to study
at a German university, we offer long-term courses (up to one year)
that enable students to prepare thoroughly for their time in Germany. If
students would like to brush up their German during their vacations
(winter, Easter break, summer, fall break,...), they can do so in
a course lasting a couple of weeks. The fact that the center in Lindenberg
is open all-year round enables students to find an appropriate course
regardless of their specific goals, time frames etc. Absolute beginners
of German as well as advanced students will find a course in Lindenberg
that meets their individual requirements.
On the first day of class, a detailed placement test is held which
allows the centre to assign students their corresponding course levels.
Thus it is ensured that courses consist of students with similar
language skills, which in turn enables optimization of the learning
progress of all participants. The small size of classes with not
more than 10 participants also contributes considerably to the fact
that students notice a clear improvement of their language skills
at the end of their course.
The intensive courses, also emphasize the fact that students need
to handle all key aspects of a foreign language (speaking, writing,
reading, listening, and grammar) to a similar degree. Experience
shows us that only the students who master all of these areas really
feel at ease in German, which in turn is the basis for a successful
and lasting learning experience.
Accommodation
The center is located off of bustling streets on a park-like campus,
just a 10-minute walk from the city center. Student housing consists
almost exclusively of rooms with one or two beds, many of which have
a fantastic view of the Alps. A large number of rooms have their
own shower and bathroom. For meals, which include three main meals
and two snacks a day, care is taken to provide a well-balanced variety
of food.
Free Time Activities
The center impresses students with its many recreational opportunities.
Budding artists and craftsman alike will find all they need here
to really relax after a day of intensive coursework. Facilities include
an auditorium with its own stage, a party room, an Internet room,
arts and crafts rooms, a workshop, pool table, darts, foosball, a
large grill, a huge playing field and sunbathing area, several balconies
(some of which are covered), and even a sauna and solarium. Regardless
of the weather, students can always have fun after class. Lindenberg
provides a number of sports and recreational opportunities, such
as movies, dancing, an outdoor swimming pool near the Waldsee, an
ice rink, summer curling sheets, etc. Students participate in organized
excursions to such places as, for example, Lindau, Meersburg, Constance,
Munich and Bregenz (Austria), to the famous Neuschwanstein and Linderhof
castles, to nearby mountain peaks and to many local towns of cultural
or scenic interest.
Student athletes will find nearly everything here that their heart
desire: Volleyball, basketball, handball, badminton and ping-pong
can be played indoors and outdoors; soccer can be played on a large
natural playing field or an artificially surfaced field. The center
includes its own indoor swimming pool with a view of the Alps, a
miniature golf course, and mountain bikes for long bike rides throughout
the magnificient surroundings.
An extensive network of trails is available in the winter for cross-country
skiing, and, of course, trips to the mountains for downhill skiing
are organised. Students interested in skiing lessons should contact
us for more information.
Students may also take riding lessons or play tennis in town; these
activities are not, however, included in the course fees.
