Matsumoto Castle - Nagano
Matsumoto Castle - Nagano

The MEC School is based in a rural town on the shores of Lake Suwa at the foot of the Japanese Alps about two and a half hours south west of Tokyo. It is an ideal base for participants wishing to combine language learning with exploring the environment and getting to know traditional Japan. The MEC is a very small school with a very personal approach and individual attention to all students.

Family accommodation will be arranged by the MEC School at a commuting distance of about 30 to 45 minutes from the school. Families offer a real insight into Japanese life and culture.

  • Classes take place from 9:30 - 12:30 each day
  • 1 - 4 students per class
  • A prior knowledge of Hiragana and Katakana, although useful, is not necessary
  • The fee of €1405 includes language classes, text books, full board accommodation with a local family, insurance and a programme of cultural activities.

Tokyo is perhaps the most exciting city in the world, contrasting the old with the new, concrete with wood, the company business man with the temple priest. Behind the hi-tech face of modern Japan lies the traditional heart of an ancient ritualistic culture waiting to be discovered.

The school offers four week intensive language training programme with classes from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day, Monday to Friday. Applications are limited to seven persons for each course. Since the Japanese Language Course uses the direct method of teaching Japanese the applicants must learn to read and write Hiragana and Katakana before arrival in Japan in order to help effective lessons at the Centre.

Accommodation is on a half board basis with carefully selected families in the suburbs of Tokyo. Sometimes these can be 1-2 hours commuting distance from the Language Centre. Public transportation to and from the Language Centre will cost up to €200 for a 4 week period. You will be the only English speaker living with your family during your stay.

  • Classes take place from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm each day, Monday to Friday.
  • Applications are limited to 7 people for each class and the fee includes one night hotel stay on arrival, all tuition, text books and homestay.
  • Students must learn to read and write Hiragana and Katakana before arrival.
  • 4 week intensive course including homestay accommodation (half board Mon-Fri, full board on weekends) & insurance €1576
