Namaste From Nepal

Namaste everyone - I've been in Nepal for over six weeks now so it's about time I finally posted something on the EIL Blog!

Jamie Tan a medical student from Malaysia living in Dublin volunteered in Nepal on a medical programme, she shares with us her story

My whole journey through volunteering in Nepal actually began on the 28th of February earlier this year, my birthday. I thought to myself, I needed to do something out of the ordinary; I wanted to get away and see a part of the world in another light. And it wasn’t the kind of view I want to get as when traveling for a holiday. Something a little more special and meaningful – like volunteering.

Brona Higgins, a student from County Monaghan, shared with us her account of volunteering for 9 weeks in Nepal.

I had always wanted to visit Nepal, but not as a mere fleeting visit or holiday where I would only get to see the 'touristy Nepal'. I chose to work as a volunteer so that I could experience true Nepali life for myself and get to the root of its culture.

I decided to go to Nepal to do something different after finishing my leaving cert and before heading off to uni. It seems silly now but one of my main concerns before I headed off was that I would be just turning 18 and everyone was telling me that I was way to young to go off by myself and do something like this. I can honestly say that it didn't make the slightest bit of difference how old you are.
