The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is hosting regional seminars for youth leaders and minority ethnic communities in three regions - Monaghan (22 March), Galway (28 March), and Kilkenny (1 April).

This nine evening participatory evening course aims to equip participants with the skills and methodologies to work effectively with groups on global development and social justice issue in a friendly, informal group environment. This course is open to anyone with an interest in educating or raising awareness about development and inequality, including but not limited to youth and community workers, and teachers.

Development Education Conference: 'Back to Basics: A Skills Based Approach to Teaching About Global Issues'

The day is aimed at teachers and informal educators who are interested in promoting justice education. The programme is available here: http://www.debtireland.org/images/documents/schools.pdf. The conference is co-hosted by  Comhlámh, Debt and Development Coalition Ireland, EcoUnesco and Trócaire in association with the Professional Development Service for Teachers (DES). Along with a range of skills based workshops on global issues there will be inputs from

  • Michael O’Leary,  National Co-ordinator  Transition Year Programme
  • Annette Honan, National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NCCA)


The day will focus on the skills learners need to develop in order to become active citizens – research and information processing skills, group work skills, critical thinking and reflection skills, dialogue and listening skills and skills associated with undertaking action for change. Practical ideas for developing these skills will be demonstrated in the various workshops and participants will be given lots of free resources to take away with them. The day is being funded by Irish Aid so there is no cost for attending.
