Imagine the excitement of telling somebody who has never been on an aeroplane that their first flight will be to Japan, Ecuador or Mexico.  Thanks to the EIL Travel Awards I have been able to do this a few times.

The are no cars or bicycles on the island - there are no roads. People move on foot or by donkey from the village at the top of the hill down to the harbour. Photo shows the main pathway on the island.

The only way to reach Isla de Viejo de Soyaltepec is by boat. Boats criss cross between the island and the mainland several times per day starting around 5am

Donkeys, turkeys, pigs and dogs wander freely around Isla de Viejo. Animal lovers will love it.

After the days work the football starts - soccer is the main sport in Mexico and the village on Isla is dominated by a big playing field.

Firewood and bananas are delivered by donkey. There are no cars or bicycles or mobile phone reception on the island.
