Study Abroad Can Evoke Strong Emotions

I was delighted to have a case study that I wrote about an EIL academic field trip published as a guest blog on the US based website Facultyled.com. Facultyled.com is the leading website for faculty and study abroad professionals interested in developing, marketing, and maintaining faculty-led study abroad. It provides information and resources about study abroad and international travel.

An copy of the case study appears below, you can read and comment upon the article here: Study Abroad Can Evoke Strong Emotions

Every year we coordinate a field trip to Belfast for American students in a study abroad program. We arrange for them to meet with various politicians, community workers, and organizations to provide a basic overview of the current situation in Northern Ireland and its culture.

We often arrange for these study abroad groups to attend service at Ian Paisley’s church in Belfast. It offers insight into the community and an opportunity to hear Dr. Paisley preach. Also, it usually results in Dr. Paisley inviting the group to his office for an informal question and answer session. Note, this is in the context of a broad program where views are heard from Catholics and Protestants, Nationalists, Republicans and Unionists.

On one occasion, a student in our group expressed doubts about attending the service. He came from a Irish Catholic background and had been brought up with a strong interest in Ireland, though I think it would be fair to say mostly from one perspective. As Ian Paisley is widely perceived as the personification of a particular type of unionism, this young man felt that he could not be in the same place as him.

After talking it over with his professor and our coordinator, he decided to attend the service but not meet Ian Paisley face to face. He was visibly affected during the service and when Ian Paisley came to meet the group, he hung back and did not go into the invited question and answer session. Our coordinator stayed with him and they talked a little about the strength of his feelings. The way he expressed it to our coordinator was that he felt it would betray his family.

Talking about this experience afterwards we couldn’t identify how we would have handled the situation differently, yet were left feeling slightly frustrated that the study abroad student missed out on a learning experience and indeed an opportunity to challenge Dr Paisley. Those question and answer sessions get quite robust! Many students from America are not afraid to ask the tough questions.

So I suppose the question this raises for study abroad is what can we do to help students better prepare for experiences which may evoke strong emotions and how can we help them process meetings and events, delivered for educational purposes, which may go against their own family background and long held beliefs.

This post was submitted by Aisling Meade, Programme Manager, EIL Intercultural Learning

Your thoughts and ideas are welcome via the comment section for this article.

Discovering Northern Ireland

‘... This trip has changed my life and has challenged me greatly. I have learned so much' (UCC Department of Government student after taking part in an EIL Field trip to Belfast)

When I think of Belfast these days I think of a modern vibrant city. One with a difficult past, certainly - but a place that is showing a new confidence - and becoming a city you want to visit to shop, to eat out and to soak up the unique culture of the place and its notoriously friendly people.
Shopping wasn't exactly top of the agenda for a me and a group from UCC that I accompanied to Belfast on the weekend of 7th - 10th March. Made up mostly of American university students, they were part of the UCC Department of Government Certificate class who go on an annual field trip to Belfast co-ordinated by EIL Ireland.

Primarily designed to expose the students to ‘behind the scenes' Belfast, they visited Stormont to witness the historic Northern Ireland Assembly in action and to meet the MLA's. They also went to see Dr Ian Paisley Snr preaching at his church and took a tour of the political murals of East and West Belfast (following an expert talk on the subject by Professor Bill Rolston of University of Ulster). The one thing they were not expecting however, was to be present in Belfast at the time of an attack by dissident republicans on a soldier and PSNI officer. These shocking and unforeseen killings presented the students with the human face of what still is a fragile peace in Northern Ireland.

Of all the groups that I have accompanied on such trips to Belfast over the years, this group seemed to really absorb everything and I could literally see them learning, changing their perspective on what is a very complex situation. As one of the students put it: ‘ It's easy to read about the political situation in Northern Ireland, but to meet politicians and actually experience and witness the situation in Northern Ireland allows one to grasp the reality. Books give facts, but people give emotions. This experience has put a face to the struggle in Northern Ireland'
