What are we looking for?

We want to open EIL travel programmes to students and young people who have had little or no opportunity to travel or who may find it difficult for financial reasons to travel abroad.

In particular we are seeking to support young people:

  • Who have a history of voluntary involvement in their school, college or their community
  • Who have demonstrated or who believe they can demonstrate leadership potential
  • Who are currently studying at third level through an Access Programme

Volunteer or other community involvement as well as leadership potential will take priority over academic capacity.

How does it work?

EIL Intercultural Learning has created a special fund to provide opportunities for 3 young people to take part in a 2-3 month summer Volunteer Abroad programme.

  • Access Programme Administrators or Teachers are invited to nominate any young person they think could benefit from participation (a special nomination form is available and you will be asked to state why you think this person should receive a travel opportunity) EIL endeavours to achieve a gender balance and therefore welcomes applications from both males and females
  • Nominations should only be made with the permission of the young person involved
  • Shortlisting will take place and this will be followed by a telephone and/or face to face interview with each candidate.
  • Selected participants are eligible to take part on one of the specified travel programmes operated by EIL. They can indicate a programme(s) of preference, but the final decision on which particular programme the young person may participate in will rest with the interview committee and with EIL
  • All preparatory, travel, accommodation, insurance, food and activity costs will be covered by EIL
  • A young person will need to demonstrate an appropriate level of maturity and responsibility in order to participate
  • Participants agree to take part in pre-departure activities organised by EIL
  • Young people participating in the University/IT Access programme must be over 18 and under 26 years of age on June 1st 2010.

How to apply

Students interested in applying for this award cannot nominate themselves. They must be nominated by an Acess Programme Administrator or a Teacher. Students do not need to complete an essay or submit any supporting material. The only document required for this award is the below application form

To nominate someone please complete this application form (pdf).

The closing date for nominations is 5pm March 26th 2010. Interviews will be held in April 2010. The names of selected participants will be announced in May 2010.

Happy times in GhanaHello! Today I'm celabrating my little aniversary - two weeks in most beautiful African country Ghana. I could not update my blog earlier as i had sever cultural shock and did not want to be too negative. Just kidding:) I have experienced some cultural shock, such as homesicness and some aspects certantly irratated my.  Most irritating aspects of my experience so far is  that local people call europeans 'oburoni' (twi language) or 'jawu' (ewe language), which means 'white person'.

On the Equator

So I´m at the end of week three here in Ecuador and what an experience it has been so far. Of course the 22 hour trip from Dublin to Quito really

takes it out of you especially when you are told your luggage is running a 'little late'. And being in a city 3km above sea level doesn't help but that di

The Road to Shangri-La

The road to Shangri-La is supposed to be an ephemeral thing, a mystical path to a hidden valley where beauty and peace prevail. But in the lagoon of Barra de Potosi, through a shallow path in the mangroves, and over a twisty, two-lane cow pat we discover the cliffs of Guamilule, the local mountain. The cliffs rise to the east from the turquoise pacific, keeping any signs of the modern world at bay. There, is a breathtaking untouched beach, with gigantic rolling waves. We surprise two wild, untied horses who roam leisurly on the beach among hermit crabs and tortugas.

Starting to feel like home.

Hola de Barra! It is my forth week here in Barra and I feel I am really beginning to settle into daily life here in this picturesque little fishing village! Today is Monday, and this morning when I went to my english class I was delighted to find the usual kids waiting for me, plus some new ones! I call it my english class as I really feel that I have put my own stamp on it, which I love! The children run towards me when they see me coming and they welcome me with hugs and the occasional flower!

How lucky so many of us are, blessed actually, to have a family who loves us - or who puts up with us at the very least ;). They look out for us, take care of us when we are sick, will be there for us even when we may not feel it - so many of us take our situations for...granted.

Now consider L - a (BEAUTIFUL and) very 'healthy' HIV+ 2.5 year old, according to his file; with a 'good CD4 count' and 'perfect' skin.
