Deadline passed: No further applications being accepted

Four fully funded bursaries are available to young people attending a DEIS School or a Youthreach Project to participate in The Hong Kong/Ireland Youth Exchange in 2010.

The Hong Kong Ireland Youth Exchange will take place in August 2010 and candidates should be available to spend 9 days in Hong Kong and 4 days with the group from Hong Kong during their visit to Ireland.

Each bursary covers all flight, accommodation, insurance and programme costs. This award is open to young people aged between 17-22.

The 4 selected young people will join a group of 8 other young people from Ireland on the programme and they will be accompanied by an Irish group leader.

What are we looking for?

We want to open EIL travel programmes to students and young people who have had little or no opportunity to travel or who may find it difficult for financial reasons to travel abroad.
In particular we are seeking to support young people:

  • Who have a history of voluntary involvement in their school or their community
  • Who have demonstrated or who believe they can demonstrate leadership potential
  • Who are considering studying at third level or are currently studying at third level through an Access Programme
  • Volunteer or other community involvement as well as leadership potential will take priority over academic capacity.

How does it work?

EIL Intercultural Learning has created a special fund to provide opportunities for 4 young people to take part in one of the specified EIL programmes during 2010

  • Teachers, Administrators and Youth Workers are invited to nominate any young person they think could benefit from participation (a special nomination form is available and you will be asked to state why you think this person should receive a travel opportunity)
  • EIL endeavours to achieve a gender balance and therefore welcomes applications from both males and females
  • Nominations should only be made with the permission of the young person involved
  • Shortlisting will take place and this will be followed by a telephone and/or face to face interview with each candidate.
  • All preparatory, travel, accommodation, insurance, food and activity costs will be covered by EIL
  • A young person will need to demonstrate an appropriate level of maturity and responsibility in order to participate
  • Participants agree to take part in pre-departure activities organised by EIL
  • Participants on the Hong Kong/Ireland Exchange should not be younger than 17 and older than 22 on the date of travel

How to apply

To nominate someone please complete this application form (pdf).

The closing date for nominations is 5pm March 26th 2010. Interviews will be held in April 2010. The names of selected participants will be announced in May 2010

Star AvenueNext time you find yourself in Asia don't be too taken aback if you are asked by one of the indigenous people, "Whats the craic?", or "How's the form?" - because thanks to the EIL Hong Kong Youth Exchange Programme at least twelve Hong Kongers are now well accustomed to using these distinctively Irish greetings – your expected response will of course be, "the craic is mighty".

After an eventful twenty hours of travelling, which included a mad dash through Amsterdam Airport that resulted in a broken flip flop and some memorable encounters with Airplane cuisine, we finally arrived in Hong Kong.We were given a warm welcome by the Hong Kong delegates, almost as warm as the heat that embraced us on leaving the Airport terminal.
