Exciting time ahead!

Catherine Anderson 2010 Travel Award WinnerWith only weeks left before my departure my excitement is rising. On the 21st of June I will be setting off on the longest journey I have ever done alone. I will go to Guatemala where I will spend two months experiencing the world of another culture. The idea of this has lead me to experience my own everyday life and culture with fresh eyes. I’m noticing things I never would have done before, such as the way we deal with situations and each other. I’m longing to see how such a vastly different culture half way round the world will compare to my own and hope this will give me a better understanding of life.

When I first heard about EIL’s Access Travel Awards I thought it sounded great and was determined not to let this opportunity pass me by without giving it my best shot. Now, only weeks after my interview I am preparing to leave for Guatemala and embrace the life-changing experience that awaits me there. All this thanks to the kind generosity of the people at EIL who have been unbelievably helpful and supportive. I plan to make the best of this exciting opportunity by entering this experience with an open mind and heart, and a willingness to learn.

As well as learning about the way of life in Guatemala, I hope that I can share with the people I meet there some aspects of my culture and the way of life here in Ireland. I also hope to bring my experience home after the two months and help others in my locality and wider community to learn of a new culture.
