Stories from the field

My internship experience in India - Part 2: "summing up my experience"

30 Sep 2010 - 11:08am

If you are truly open to trying new things…things that perhaps end up being difficult or extremely frustrating at times…and if you are truthfully open-minded, flexible and patience, then you will enjoy every second. If you are impatient or easily irritated, then India is not for you! I think I learned to be more patient from my time in India, mainly as a result of constant power cuts during the day! However, if you can avoid complaining over little things, and not worry so much, then you will stay in a much more positive mind frame throughout your experience. Having a positive frame of mind, I think, will certainly lead to a more successful and momentous journey.

My internship experience in India - Part 1: "the internship work"

30 Sep 2010 - 11:01am

I learned a lot on the health needs of adolescents, and particular problems that are greeted with the Indian youth of today. Other work we carried out included the preparation of several project brochures, and the preparation of concept notes. Our concept notes included - ‘Attitudes and Behaviours of youth in Rajasthan towards Sexual & Reproductive Health’, and ‘Awareness of HIV/AIDs among youth in Rajasthan’.

Ber and Sarah, Public Helath and Health Promotion Students in UCC tell us about their internship programme in India

27 May 2010 - 8:57am

Any previous views we had of India have completely changed for the better. When we remember back to the EIL pre-departure workshop and the chat you gave on culture shock, we really did not realise how much of a cultural difference we were letting ourselves in for. Everything is so unbelievably different and challenging, but we wouldn't want it any other way.

Comments from previous interns who worked in India

3 Mar 2009 - 3:45pm

The community work motivated us to write our final bachelor assignment about the Fisherman community. We will come back in March to do more research and work on it. We feel that we have been able to see and use the school literature during our work. We are sure that we will benefit from this experience when we start working as child welfare officers in Norway. We are also motivated to do more work outside Norway.

Professor Karlsson's thoughts on the Internship in India programme

3 Mar 2009 - 3:39pm

I have just had the pleasure of welcoming back our two students from Goa. Last week we arranged a debriefing session for all students who had been abroad for their practice placements, and I am happy to report that our students who did their practice placements in Goa were very well satisfied with their stay and work there. They were particularly satisfied with the supervision provided, and my impression of the work of Idex in India is very positive.
