Jo from Australia volunteered at the Burmese Migrant Learning Centre

The Burmese Migrant Learning Centre is open for 6 days a week to Burmese migrants and refugees to learn English, Thai, Computer or Accounting classes. Classes are scheduled for the morning (9 to 11) and the evening (6 to 8/10).

My placement was for 9 weeks beginning in early February (coinciding with the beginning of semester). I arrived with the general impression that I'd be teaching English each day at the centre. However, instead of a tightly scheduled placement, I spent the first 2 weeks of my placement negotiating times and responsibilities with the directors there. Although a little frustrating initially, the flexibility allowed me to also get involved in preparation for the MLC's forthcoming primary school.

For the remainder of the placement, my two roles then were as English teacher - for two days per week, and curriculum developer/ teacher trainer for 2-3 days per week.

The approach at the MLC is very welcoming and inclusive but also laidback in terms of organisation.

I learnt a great deal from the people I worked with, particularly about Burmese people living in Thailand and the astonishing challenges they face. I was really satisfied with the contribution I was able to make here and the whole experience left a great impression on me.
