Katrina, a 25 year old volunteer from the US, worked at the Burmese Women centre
Working with Thai and Burmese women was very eye-opening. I think there is a western stereotype that Asian women are passive and soft-spoken. This was definitely not the case in my volunteer placement. I was surrounded by strong, intelligent, outspoken women leaders. They taught me a lot about Thai society and culture, especially about workers rights, traditional gender roles, and family dynamics.
I come from a social-work background and originally did not want to teach English. I decided to have an open mind, and was glad that I did. Teaching allowed me a place in my organization's community. Teachers are highly respected in Thai culture and I was able to meet, talk to, and gain trust many people through this role. It seems very important that a volunteer be the observer, and not the boss. Teaching allowed me to observe and learn before becoming more active in the organization.
