Deirdre tells us about her first two weeks in Thailand
I arrived in Chaing Mai on January 3rd 2010. The first day we had orientation and i have completely embraced the Thai culture. They have an amazing history and i am enjoying the customs the people are familiar with.
The first 4 days me and 3 other volunteers did Thai classes. I have to admit my Thai is not great but i really enjoyed the classes and i speak Thai when ever i can.
I have been placed in the Wildflower home, this home houses women and children in crisis situations. keeping with Thai traditions its not polite to ask questions about a persons situation so i don't. However some women volunteer information. Most of the women have been abused, rejected from there families due to pregnancy,or are fleeing Vietnam.
I am working in childcare daily and i love it. This is week 2 so the children are beginning to be more friendly with me, we play loads of games sing songs etc. the favorite is "head shoulders knees and toes" but the "hokey pokey" is also a favorite. I painted the girls t\finger and toe nails, made jewelery, painted, played with play dough, sing, dance and share some English words with them its all good fun.
The most enjoyable aspect is just having a laugh and making he children smile. All the other volunteers are wonderful, the women and men working here are great and many have amazing stories..
If you read this blog and are considering doing volunteer work...My advice is just do it...Its a great experience. My only regret so far is hat my time here will end too soon.
