What Course do we offer?

We offer standard and intensive courses throughout the year. A programme of sports, excursions and recreational activities is held as well.

Standard Courses

On arrival, all students take a placement test to determine language ability. They are then placed in a multinational class appropriate to their language levels.

  • Standard 20 – 20 group lessons per week
  • Intensive 26 – 26 group lessons per week
  • Super-Intensive 30 – 30 group lessons per week

Leaving Certificate Preparation Course

More and more students are telling us how participating in a language course has helped them achieve better exam results.  With this in mind, we are delighted to provide an intensive language course that is ideal for Leaving Certificate preparation.  In just two weeks, Spanish skills can significantly improve both in spoken and written form, and the combination of language classes and staying with a host family offers dual language learning – perfect for Leaving Certificate preparation! Students will also have the chance to relax and have some fun through guided tours, cultural activities and excursions. These courses are taught to a 5th Year level. Students can add on an extra week or two of the Intensive or Super-Intensive course either before or after the Leaving Certificate Preparation Course to further enhance learning.

Please note that a minimum of 6 participants is required to run a course. Alternative dates or courses will be arranged if 6 participants cannot be found or a full refund will be given. Should one of the courses not run, we will work with students to find an alternative programme option to suit their needs.

At our request, our partners in Malaga have organised this intensive language and activity programme for Irish participants traveling with AFS/EIL. In just two weeks, students’ oral and written Spanish can significantly improve. The combination of language classes and staying with a Spanish host family offers dual language learning – ideal for Leaving Certificate preparation! Students will also have a chance to relax and have some fun through tours, cultural activities and excursions. This is a closed group course; there are a limited number of places (maximum 12 students per group) and there will only be other Irish students taking part in the class.

This course is suitable for students from Transition Year to Leaving Certificate level. Students will sit a placement test on arrival to assess their level in order to ensure maximum language learning. The course material is specifically geared towards preparation for the Irish Leaving Certificate Exam for Spanish.

The course takes place over set dates. Programmes will not be confirmed until the minimum of 6 participants is secured for each session. In the event that 6 students do not sign up for any particular Leaving Certificate Preparation Course, a place on an alternative session can be arranged, or a place on one of the other courses (Standard, Intensive, Intensive Plus or Super Intensive) for the same dates can be arranged. If neither of these options suits, deposits can be refunded.

Included in the Leaving Certificate Preparation course are:

  • 26 lessons of Spanish per week
  • One full-day excursion
  • Books and materials
  • Single or twin room, half board accommodation with a host family
  • A schedule of afternoon and weekly activities such as Sevillana dance classes and cultural talks
  • Transfer from Malaga airport or railway station
  • CareMed medical travel insurance

If students prefer to extend their programme to more than 2 weeks, it is possible to add on one of the other courses for any number of weeks either before or after the Leaving Certificate Preparation Course.

1 group lesson = 50 minutes of teaching time.

Living with a host family is the best way to learn Spanish and to experience Spanish culture. There is no such thing as a “typical” Spanish host family; some host families are married couples with children, some are single parents and some do not have children. What is offered is a genuinely caring environment in clean and comfortable surroundings. To maintain best quality, no special  requests for siblings or friends to be placed near each other will be considered.

Arrival and Departure

Students are responsible for organising their own flights and must arrive on the Sunday before the course begins and depart on the Saturday after the last day of the classes.

Transfers from Malaga Airport are included in the programme. Students will be met at the arrivals area and again returned to the airport once the course finishes.

Activities and Excursions

Each week the school gives out information about the activities on offer and the main events that are happening in Malaga at the time. Some are free, and others are pay-as-you-go. Some examples are as follows:

  • Fiestas
  • Courses in flamenco dancing or flamenco guitar
  • International cuisine: Students have the chance to learn how to cook one of the best-known dishes: paella/Spanish omelet, as well as trying typical dishes from the countries of other students
  • Lunches and dinners in Malaga restaurants can also be arranged to try out typical dishes and new Andalus cuisine
  • Visits to museums, monuments and the botanical gardens of Malaga are free, organised weekly and accompanied by a guide (examples may include Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba, Gibraltar, etc.)
  • Organised excursions to places of cultural, monumental or tourist interest are organised every Saturday and are accompanied by a guide
  • Concerts, theatre, cinema, Flamenco, shows, etc.
  • Films: Spanish DVDs are shown in the school followed by group discussions.

Standard courses and the Leaving Certificate Preparation course are run in an adult language school, therefore programmes there are suitable only for students who are 16 and over and have a certain level of maturity and sense of responsibility. The most popular time for teenage attendance is July-September, otherwise classes tend to be small and mainly comprised of adult learners. This course does not offer 24-hour supervision and is not suitable for all students. Students are supervised only when they are in the language school or on language school organised activities (some of which are optional). Students will have a good bit of unsupervised free time and will be free to come and go as they please when they do not have lessons, and in the evenings after dinner.
