Speak French with Host Families

Prices are quoted with host family accommodation with half board.  Residential accommodation in a hostel or self-catering apart-hotel is also available upon request, but will change the programme price.  Please ask for more details and a price quote.

Host families understand the importance of their role in making students' visits both successful and enjoyable.  They will not only introduce students to the French way of life and help them practice the language, but will also offer a taste of local and delicious French food.

Host families as standard will provide:

  • A single room
  • Bath towels and bedding
  • Breakfast and dinner during the week and full board at the weekend
  • Key to the house, in most cases

A hospitality officer visits host families regularly to check on all aspects of a student's stay with them.  They make every effort to make the perfect match between students and families.  If applicants have certain dietary needs or other special requirements, please tell us in advance and they will do their best to find the right family to accommodate those needs.  Host family details can be sent as little as two weeks prior to departure.

Learning through French

Students are placed in groups comprised of five different levels, ranging from beginners to advanced.  Courses start every Monday.  On the first day there is an evaluation and needs analysis session in the morning, and on the first afternoon a free orientation session is offered for new students, introducing them to the city of Rouen.

Each week students may choose the French workshops that they wish to attend, for example: grammar, pronunciation, professional French, listening skills, writing skills, reading skills, etc.  The maximum number of students in each group is eight.  The school can also organise additional individual lessons for students at any time.  These are tailor-made to suit students' specific needs.  Please ask for details.

The Semi-Intensive and Intensive courses are the basic language skill courses offered throughout the year.  This format gives each student flexibility in the number of lessons per week: 15 to 25 lessons.  Every Wednesday afternoon there is an activity or excursion offered to students.  These cost an extra fee and are optional for students.

  • What do I write in the “Dear Host Family” letter?

The letter to your host family is an opportunity to introduce yourself and tell your hosts about yourself- your family, hobbies, interests and friends are all good topics.  Written in French, your letter will differentiate you from other students the host families may be hosting or have hosted in the past.  It may also give your hosts topics to use to start conversation with you once you arrive so you can practise your French even more about topics relevant to you.

  • What is a typical class size?

A maximum of eight students per class will be in the morning classes; afternoon workshops and lessons have a maximum of ten.

  • Will all the students be English speakers?

This is not likely.  The top five nationalities that the school accepted in recent years were from Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden and Turkey.
