A Week to Remember: Connemara Welcomed the World for the 18th Volunteer Summer Summit
For six unforgettable days this July, the beautiful village of Letterfrack, Connemara became a vibrant meeting place for over 100 volunteers from across Europe and beyond as EIL Intercultural Learning proudly hosted the 18th Volunteer Summer Summit (VSS).
Organised by volunteers, for volunteers, the summit brought together passionate young leaders from dozens of countries, united by a shared commitment to building stronger communities and creating a more connected world. Against the stunning backdrop of Ireland’s west coast, participants embraced this year’s theme, “Active Digital Citizenship for Resilient Students and Volunteers,” exploring what it means to be an active global citizen in an increasingly digital world.
But VSS was so much more than a conference. It was a week of connection, inspiration, collaboration and personal growth.
Learning from the Best
Throughout the week, participants immersed themselves in a packed programme of interactive workshops, thought-provoking discussions and practical training sessions delivered by an incredible team of experienced trainers and facilitators. Their energy, expertise and passion created a learning environment where everyone felt encouraged to share ideas, challenge perspectives and develop new skills.
From leadership and intercultural communication to digital citizenship, resilience and volunteer development, every workshop offered fresh insights and practical tools that participants can now bring back to their local communities and volunteer networks.
The reflection groups and collaborative activities provided valuable space to process learning, exchange experiences and build friendships that crossed borders, cultures and languages.
More Than Training
One of the most powerful aspects of the Volunteer Summer Summit is the community it creates.
Over the course of the week, strangers quickly became teammates, collaborators and lifelong friends. Cultural evenings celebrated the diversity of the AFS family, conversations continued long after workshops ended, and every shared meal, activity and walk through the spectacular Connemara landscape reinforced the importance of intercultural understanding.
The atmosphere throughout the summit perfectly reflected EIL Intercultural Learning’s mission of inspiring active global citizenship through meaningful international experiences.
Celebrating Volunteers
Hosted during Ireland’s International Year of Volunteers and ahead of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026, the summit was a timely reminder of the incredible impact volunteers have in shaping more inclusive, resilient and connected communities.
The event also highlighted the dedication of EIL’s own volunteer network, whose commitment and hard work helped make the week such a remarkable success. From planning and logistics to welcoming participants and creating an unforgettable experience, volunteers were truly at the heart of every moment.
Looking Ahead
As participants returned home to countries across Europe and beyond, they left with much more than new knowledge. They carried home fresh ideas, strengthened leadership skills, renewed confidence and an expanded international network of friends and fellow changemakers.
The conversations started in Letterfrack won’t end there. They will continue in communities, schools and volunteer organisations around the world, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
