Empowering Educators Across Ireland Through Global Competence Training

At EIL Ireland, we are proud to celebrate a significant milestone in our ongoing partnership with AFS Intercultural Programs and Post-Primary Languages Ireland. Recently, 43 dedicated educators from across Ireland successfully completed their journey toward earning the Global Competence Certificate (GCC), a transformative professional development experience designed to foster globally minded teaching and learning.

This diverse and passionate cohort completed a hybrid learning programme that combined online modules with interactive, facilitated sessions. The programme culminated in a dynamic dialogue session, where participants came together to share insights, reflect on their learning, and engage in meaningful discussions grounded in their own classroom experiences.

Reflecting on Culture, Identity, and Inclusion

One of the most powerful aspects of the training was the opportunity for educators to reflect deeply on their own perspectives. Participants explored how their understanding of culture and identity has evolved over time, both personally and professionally, and how this shapes their interactions with students.

A recurring theme throughout the programme was the importance of creating safe and supportive learning environments. Educators emphasised the need to provide spaces where students feel empowered to explore their identities, particularly during the formative and often complex teenage years. These reflections highlighted a shared commitment to nurturing inclusive classrooms where every student feels seen, heard, and valued.

Recognising Diversity as a Strength

Participants also explored the growing diversity within Irish classrooms and communities, recognising it as a powerful asset rather than a challenge. This shift in perspective lies at the heart of global competence education, encouraging both educators and students to embrace difference, build empathy, and develop the skills needed to navigate an interconnected world.

Lasting Impact on Teaching and Learning

Having completed the programme, educators have strengthened their capacity for critical reflection, deepened peer collaboration, and built lasting professional connections. The impact of this learning is already being seen in classrooms across Ireland, where more inclusive, empathetic, and globally aware learning environments are taking shape.

We are proud to celebrate the achievements of this inspiring group. Their commitment to developing global competence is enriching their teaching practice and helping to shape more inclusive and culturally responsive education for their students.

About the Global Competence Certificate

The Global Competence Certificate is an innovative digital education programme developed by AFS Intercultural Programs. It equips educators, students, and professionals with the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to thrive in a diverse and interconnected world.

The programme focuses on four core areas:

  • Self-awareness
  • Awareness of others
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Tools and strategies for bridging differences

Through completing this learning journey, participants have developed the competencies needed to contribute to a more just and peaceful world, both inside and beyond the classroom.

At EIL Ireland, we are honoured to support initiatives that empower educators and inspire meaningful change. We look forward to continuing to see how this cohort brings their learning to life.
