Young Changemakers at the Governor’s Institute of Vermont

At EIL/AFS Ireland, we believe some of life’s most important learning happens beyond the classroom. Education is found in conversations, shared experiences, communities, creative spaces, and in the people who encourage us to grow.

For young people, opportunities to step outside their everyday environment, meet new people and experience different perspectives can be transformative. They can build confidence, challenge assumptions and inspire a stronger sense of purpose.

In 2026, five young people had the opportunity to take part in the Governor’s Institute of Vermont Youth Activist Program through the Explore Youth Activist Scholarships. Alongside their Irish and American peers, they explored what it means to be an active citizen, a compassionate leader and a young person capable of creating positive change in their community.

Meet the 2026 Explore Youth Activist Scholarship Winners

This year’s scholarship recipients – Sophie Lynam, Scott Clinton, Maeve Stauton and Joel Finn, brought their own experiences, perspectives and ideas to the programme.

Their time at the Governor’s Institute of Vermont was about much more than attending a programme. It was an opportunity to connect with other young people, learn from different experiences and discover new possibilities for making a difference.

The Power of Mentorship and Positive Role Models

One of the most valuable parts of the Youth Activist Program was the opportunity to learn from an incredible team of adults who supported and encouraged participants throughout their experience.

Mentorship and positive role models can have a lasting impact on a young person’s confidence, sense of purpose and belief in their ability to make a difference. By challenging young people to think critically, encouraging them to share their ideas and creating space for them to grow, mentors can help turn potential into action.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the programme director, coordinators, academic staff, guest speakers, residential assistants, health team, driver, volunteers and everyone else who contributed to making the Governor’s Institute of Vermont Youth Activist Program 2026 such a meaningful experience.

Building a Global Community of Young Changemakers

Experiences like this demonstrate why international youth programmes and educational exchanges matter. The friendships formed, conversations shared and perspectives gained can continue long after a programme comes to an end.

For the young people who took part, GIVYA 2026 was an opportunity to learn, connect and consider how they can contribute to positive change in their own communities and beyond.
